Princess Diana’s evening dress, designed by Jacques Azagury, has been auctioned for an astonishing $1.14 million, making it the most expensive dress ever worn by Lady Diana to be sold in this manner.
Imitating Princess Diana is not easy, even when her most iconic dresses are up for auction. But there’s nothing wrong with trying or using this beacon of style as inspiration, right?

A dress worn by Princess Diana in 1985 has broken a new fashion record after being sold for $1.14 million. The dress, by Jacques Azagury, was offered at Julien’s Auctions and, not surprisingly, sold for 11 times the original estimate of $100,000. It’s the “Diana effect” that prevails even 26 years after her death.
The dress, designed by the renowned Moroccan-British designer, was worn by the British Royal in Florence, Italy, in April 1985 and again at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986. This beautiful ballerina-length dress now holds the world record title for the most expensive Princess Diana dress sold at auction.
Earlier this year, this record was achieved by a purple Victor Edelstein dress worn by Princess Diana in a royal portrait from 1991, which was sold for a colossal $604,800 at Sotheby’s.
Diana wore creations by Jacques Azagury on various occasions, but this piece from Julien’s Auctions was considered special, paying tribute to her patronage of the English National Ballet and her love for dance. According to Julien’s Auctions, the dress, with padded shoulder pads, features a black velvet bodice with stars embroidered in metallic thread made of Jakob Schlaepfer fabric, and a two-layer royal blue organza skirt with sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect homage to Diana’s love for dance and her role as a patron of the English National Ballet.
In addition to this black and blue beauty, the Julien’s Auctions and TCM Present: Hollywood Legends event also auctioned a blouse worn by Diana for her engagement portrait in 1981. The pink crepe blouse with a ruffled collar also fetched an incredible $381,000, nearly four times its original estimate of $80,000. The buyer remains unidentified.
